Seasonal sand movement monitoring: Many beach areas experience a seasonal cycle of sand loss and redeposition. In Southern California significant amounts of sand are washed offshore by winter storms and brought back during the spring. The balance and trends in loss versus deposition is important for the assessment and planning of beach sand augmentation projects. Ocean Imaging has utilized its multispectral sensors specifically configured for water penetration to image intertidal and subtidal areas and their corresponding sand and exposed reef patterns several times per year. The image time series then allows change analysis of seasonal sand transport and the exposure of underlying bedrock.
